FOUR OF IRONMAN EUROPE’S MOST STUNNING LOCATIONS TO RACE IN 2022

IWD Leadership Article Header 1

You may have heard of an IRONMAN triathlon, but what exactly is it? An IRONMAN triathlon encompasses a 3.8km swim, 180km bike and 42.2km marathon run consecutively in that order. Typically, the cut off for the swim is 2 hours 20 minutes, for the bike it’s 8 hours 10 minutes, and for the run it’s 6 hours 15 minutes. This gives you a total of 16 hours 45 minutes to complete the swim, bike and run legs.

An IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon is half that distance. It encompasses a 1.9km swim, 90km bike and 21.1km run. Typically, the cut off for the swim is 1 hour 10 minutes, for the bike it’s 4 hours 5 minutes and for the run it’s 3 hours 15 minutes. This gives you a total of 8 hours and 30 minutes in which you would have to complete the event.

Globally, there are over 200 IRONMAN triathlons and IRONMAN 70.3 triathlons which see athletes racing in various destinations across Europe, North America, South America, Oceania, Middle East, Africa, and Asia. This global phenomenon has attracted a bevy of celebrities such as celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, British racing driver Jenson Button, Lord of the Rings star Sean Astin, to name but a few. With the likes of former British professional footballer Frank Lampard, and Formula One driver Sebastien Vettel having publicly expressed their desire to complete one and ticking it off their bucket list.

IRONMAN events may be among the toughest triathlon events in sport but sees thousands of ordinary people achieve extraordinary things. Some of the remarkable stories to come out of these events include Sam Holness, known as ‘Super Sam’. Sam is an autistic athlete who has competed in multiple events and has set his sights on becoming the first autistic BAME (Black, Asian and minority ethic) community to finish the IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. And Chris Nikic, who became the first person with down syndrome to finish an IRONMAN triathlon. The IRONMAN community is a community of all shapes and sizes and from all walks of life, from professional Olympic triathletes, single moms, grandparents looking for a retirement hobby and athletes who work a 9 till 5 job.

With many IRONMAN European events having reached race capacity, meaning entries are closed due to the racecourse reaching the maximum number of athletes the course can hold. Athletes may be disheartened for missing out on some of the events. However, there are plenty of other exciting options to choose from. Some just a doorstep away, others are calling for a friendship gathering and jetting off on a much-needed road trip or a short travel adventure. We have pulled together the best European races which still have entries available.
